CRASH!

Renji Abarai flinched as the thunder exploded over his friend’s home.

“What a storm… Going on and on like this….” Renji shook his head slightly and scuttled over to the shoji screen door of his borrowed bedroom to the wooden walk outside.

Sliding the thin door open a bit, Renji impatiently pushed loose strands of his blood-red ponytail out of his dark, intelligent chocolate brown eyes. He then turned his eyes to the storm outside.

Rain pounded the already soaked earth around the large, old fashion, Japanese home. The wind howled like an angry beast and yanked at the trees around the grounds, pulling some of them to the ground, and snapping the weaker branches clean in two. Whip after whip of lightning cracked open the sky, sending thunder roaring over the house and surrounding area.

Renji sighed. He’d never get to sleep at this rate. It was probably well past midnight already!

Renji sighed again and slid the door closed before walking over to sit against the wall, listening to the storm and dwelling on other things.

Renji Abarai was an intelligent, strong young man at the age of twenty-two, having already seen more things than someone at the age of eighty should have in terms of warfare and fighting. Trained in combat from the day he began to walk, he suffered the same curse that every member of the Abarai family put up with, including his younger sister who was ten years his junior.

Renji frowned as his thoughts turned toward his sister.

Arai Abarai was normally a very playful young girl but, at age twelve, had already been thrown into combat. No matter what Renji had done or said, his parents and the elders in the family had not let the curse of the Abarai pass Arai by and began training her in combat from the moment she began to walk.

Renji’s frowned deepened. The elders had been especially hard on them because they were siblings – something very rare amongst the Abarais – and were so close.

Much like Renji, Arai’s eyes were intelligent and piercing, the dark chocolate brown orbs missing very little if anything. She always wore her night black, blood-dipped tresses in a high ponytail. Plus, she was strong, smart, and pretty to boot.

But, Arai’s once carefree attitude had changed several weeks ago, at the loss of hers and Renji’s entire family. They had come home one night to their two friends, Kisuke Urahara and Byakuya Kuchiki, standing there. The two had told them the awful news and now Renji and Arai were staying at Byakuya’s home until they all decided what exactly to do. Since then, Arai had been easily frightened and always wanting to be near Renji, which Renji really didn’t mind. If she needed the comfort, he would give it willingly since they only had each other left.

Suddenly, a particularly loud clad of thunder roared over the house and Renji’s eyes snapped open at it. Had he really heard what he thought or was he just paranoid?

Deciding to act on his paranoia rather than make a mistake he would regret, Renji got to his feet, made sure his futon and an extra one were laid out then walked silently to the shoji door on the opposite side of the room.

Sliding it open fully, he didn’t go very far when a smaller object launched itself into his arms, clutching at the front of his black kataginu.

Tumbling back into the room, Renji landed hard as the figure in his arms clutched at him and cried softly into his chest.

Though dazed, Renji knew exactly who the figure was and wrapped his arms comfortingly around her, whispering words equally as comforting.

“Shh. Shh. It’s okay, Arai-chan. It’s all right. I’m here. I’m here.”

Picking his little sister up with remarkable ease, he carried her over to the extra futon and laid her down, her still clinging to him.

Pulling her hands away from his shirt, Renji made to get up and shut the shoji door, but Arai cried out and clung to her older brother even more.

Renji smiled sadly and pushed his sister’s hands away quietly reassuring her that he was only going to shut the door. After several minutes of reassurances, Arai finally, still crying, released her brother so he could shut the door.

While doing this, Renji felt Arai’s frightened eyes on him the entire time until he kneeled beside her once again and she buried herself in his arms.

“Shh. It’s okay, Arai-chan. I’m here. Nothing will happen, I promise.”

This did little to calm his terrified sister and Renji racked his brain for a way to calm Arai so she, at least, could get some sleep.

He tried everything he could think of. He tried to talk her into calming down and rubbed her back the way his mother use to do for them when they were upset. Nothing worked.

Finally, one last idea came to his mind and Renji figured he had nothing to lose.

Clearing his throat, Renji began to softly sing the words of the lullaby his mother used to sing.

Little child, be not afraid
the wind pounds harsh against the glass
like an unwanted stranger
there is no danger
I am here tonight

Renji unconsciously realized his sister’s cries becoming softer, but kept going.

Little child
be not afraid
though thunder explodes
and lightning flash
illuminates your tear-stained face
I am here tonight

And someday you’ll know
that nature is so
this same rain that draws you near me
falls on rivers and land
and forests and sand
makes the beautiful words that you see
in the morning

Renji felt Arai relax slightly and smiled as he continued.

Little child
be not afraid
the storm clouds mask your beloved moon
and its candlelight beams
still keep pleasant dreams
I am here tonight

Little child
be not afraid
the wind makes creatures of our trees
and the branches to hands
they’re not real, understand
and I am here tonight

And someday you’ll know
that nature is so
this same rain that draws you near me
falls on rivers and land
and forest and sand
makes the beautiful world that you see
in the morning

Renji felt Arai release her death grip on him, but he continued to sing.

For you know, once even I
was a little child
and I was afraid
but a gentle someone always came
to dry all my tears
trade sweet sleep for fears
and to give a kiss goodnight

Well, now I am grown
and these days have shown
that rain’s a part of how life goes
but it’s dark and it’s late
so I’ll hold you and wait
‘til your frightened eyes do close

Renji’s smile grew as he heard Arai’s voice harmonize with his. At least she had calmed down.

And I hope that you’ll know
that nature is so
this rain that draws you near me
falls on rivers and land
and forests and sand
makes the beautiful world that you see
in the morning

Everything’s fine in the morning
The rain will be gone in the morning

A soft whisper reached Renji’s ears as Arai’s voice faded out. “Itsumo arigato, nii-san.” And Arai slid off into sleep.

But I’ll still be here in the morning

“You’re welcome, imoto-chan. Aishiteru, little sister.”

Renji looked at the shoji door toward the outside world and smiled. What do you know? The storm had ended.
Okay.... My first attempt last night of loading my story didn't go so well. But... Oh well...

Anyway....

I know it's a little off the Bleach story line, but that's okay. It's a fanfiction after all.

I also did this for extra credit at school, so that's why it doesn't follow the story line too well, too. I doubt my religious English teacher would have appreciated it. ^_^

Yes, I made Renji have a little sister and an actually family instead of growing up on the streets. Big deal. I think Renji would have made an excellent brother. In fact, he acts kinda like my big brother, so that attributes to the big brother factor too. ^_^

Anyone know who sings this song (it is an actual song, I found out)? My cousin gave me the lyrics and said I should make a story out of them, so I have no idea besides that. If the lyrics are wrong, too, let me know.

I might scrap this later, too. Not sure yet. Anyway, moving on..

I was a little redundant at the end. "...but he continued to sing...." Geesh!

Hope you like it! ^_^

Aww, I love it. This actually helped me with a story I'm working on, in which I gave Renji a little sister who's a Vizard. Needless to say, that strained their relationship a bit. xD

Either way, this story is great, and getting favorited right away.

Oh, you're welcome. It was a major help, since I could get someone else's perspective on how Renji would act with a little sister, and how he would handle strain.
